KERERU COTTAGE OF POHARA

This charming quintessential kiwi bach is hidden away in a secret garden in the peaceful Pohara Valley. Behind the rustic gates, there is a wilderness that draws you in; two windmill palms stand sentinel to Kereru Cottage, and either side of the veranda, you are led from deck to path, from path to lawn, then from lawn to potager, and beyond that, more wilderness. Somewhere in the wilderness a small creek makes background music to the birdsong, as it makes it way downhill to the sea, which is just a short stroll down the road.

Located on the Eastern coastline, between the popular beachside suburb of Pohara and the marina at Port Tarakohe, Pohara Valley is a friendly wee community. Apart from the beach and the bay, there is a Marae, and a public hall, tennis court, bowling club, and a cycleway via the golf links all the way to Takaka.

Today, Pohara valley is an eclectic mix of well loved homes and holiday cottages, and back in the 1940's, when Golden Bay Cement works was open, this was where the working men lived. Apparently, Kereru Cottage is two military camp huts joined together - the forerunner for tiny homes no doubt! She is still a modest old girl with an open plan living area, modernised bathroom, and two bedrooms. The open fire has been replaced with a freestanding log burner, and just recently a heatpump was added for extra comfort. Out back there is a freestanding laundry - where "mother" would have spent her Monday at the copper - and a couple of garden sheds. The single garage is accessed from the street. Really, what more do you need? Its sunny, it's insulated, and as cute as can be.
