A historic Grey Lynn property has been sold for the first time in 100 years, with 21 registered bidders interested in the property.
Located at 23 Millais Street, the large four-bedroom home was bought by a family who emigrated from England in the early 1920s, and has been in the family since that time.
The son of the couple who initially bought the property was living in the home until three years ago and it’s being sold as a deceased estate.
The property sold for $2,525,000 — $800,000 above the 2017 CV.
Ray White Ponsonby salesperson Scott Wither said it was one of the best “do-up” properties he’d seen.
“The aspect is right, and the size of the original dwelling is desirable,” Mr Wither said.
“It has five big spaces in the original part of the home including four large bedrooms plus the lounge. Often these homes have a smaller footprint than what’s on offer here.’
“People get excited when an opportunity like this presents itself particularly given the length of tenure that this one has. It still retains many original features as well as that air of nostalgia and history.”
Mr Wither said there has been half a dozen or so sales on Millais Street in the past 12 months, many with owners who had lived in the neighborhood for decades.
“All the buyers have been people in their 30s and young families who are spending the money to do these properties up,” he said.
“Two distinct buyer pools for this home, high-end developers but mostly people in their early 30s — they’re making up about 80 per cent of buyers.”
